Getting started
What is Mountain Training?
Mountain Training provides personalized online strength and endurance coaching for hiking, expeditions, trail running, climbing, mountaineering and ski touring. Our approach connects structured training with the demands of real mountain objectives.
Getting started
Who is coaching for?
Recreational hikers, first-time endurance athletes and experienced mountain adventurers are welcome. Your plan starts with your current fitness, experience and goals, not a minimum race time or climbing grade.
Getting started
Do I need prior experience?
No. We adapt preparation to your starting point. Technical mountain activities still require appropriate instruction, equipment and judgment; a fitness plan does not replace those skills.
Getting started
What makes mountain coaching different?
We prepare you for the specific demands of your objective: long climbs, descents, loaded hiking, repeated days and sport-specific strength. Jordan’s professional guiding and endurance experience informs how we balance training with recovery and everyday life.
Getting started
Where are you based, and can I train remotely?
We are based on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and coach remotely across Canada and beyond. You do not need local mountain access: sessions can be adapted to your terrain, gym access and schedule.
Training and services
Which objectives can you help me prepare for?
Hiking and backpacking, Kilimanjaro and other expedition preparation, trail races and ultras, climbing fitness, alpine objectives, and ski or splitboard touring. Tell us about the route, event or season you have in mind.
Training and services
Are plans personalized?
Yes. Your goals, current fitness, available time, equipment and recovery needs shape the plan. Programming is delivered through TrainingPeaks, with updates and check-ins according to your package.
Training and services
How long should I train before an event or trip?
There is no single preparation window. It depends on your starting point and the demands of your objective. Several months can allow gradual development; we will discuss a realistic timeline before recommending a plan.
Training and services
What does each coaching package include?
Basecamp Training is $150 CAD/month with monthly programming and one monthly check-in. Ridge Training is $200 CAD/month with twice-weekly programming updates and two monthly check-ins. Summit Performance Coaching is $275 CAD/month with weekly updates, weekly check-ins and active training-load management. Check-ins are by phone or email. See Coaching for the full inclusions.

Mountain preparation
Can you help me train for an FKT attempt?
We can help build fitness, pacing discipline and resilience around the demands of your planned Fastest Known Time attempt. Route research, current conditions, safety planning and the rules of the relevant FKT record remain important responsibilities. Coaching does not guarantee a result.
Mountain preparation
Can you prepare me for a specific hike or climb?
Yes. Share the expected duration, elevation gain, pack weight, terrain and technical demands. We use that information to make your physical preparation more specific. Technical instruction and guiding are separate from the online training plan.
Mountain preparation
What equipment do I need?
It depends on your goal. Suitable footwear and access to basic strength equipment can be useful, but we adapt sessions to what you have. A GPS watch can help track training but is not a requirement. Do not buy specialist gear before discussing your plan.
Mountain preparation
How is recovery built into training?
Plans balance training with rest and easier sessions, with stretching and practical recovery guidance. Tell your coach about fatigue, pain, sleep and life stress so workloads can be adjusted. Training cannot eliminate injury risk.
Technology
How does TrainingPeaks work?
TrainingPeaks holds your training calendar and session instructions. You can log completed workouts and feedback, and share activity data to help your coach review progress and make planned adjustments. Feedback is part of coaching, not live monitoring during every session.
Technology
Can I connect my GPS watch?
Compatible devices and connected platforms can sync activity data, and some support structured workouts. Features vary by watch, workout type and platform. Check your device’s current TrainingPeaks compatibility; we do not promise universal integration.
Technology
Do I need exercise videos to use the plan?
Ask your coach for clarification whenever an exercise is unfamiliar. We will discuss the instruction and resources appropriate to your plan before you start. Do not perform an exercise you cannot complete safely.
